Optical Morphology Evolution of Infrared Luminous Galaxies in Goods-n
We combine optical morphologies and photometry from HST, redshifts from Keck, and mid-infrared luminosities from Spitzer for an optically selected sample of ∼ 800 galaxies in GOODS-N to track morphology evolution of infrared luminous galaxies (LIRGs) since redshift z = 1. We find a 50% decline in the number of LIRGs from z ∼ 1 to lower redshift, in agreement with previous studies. In addition, ...
متن کاملIdentification of Luminous Infrared Galaxies
We present preliminary results on 24μm detections of luminous infrared galaxies at z > ∼ 1 with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). Observations were performed in the Lockman Hole and the Extended Groth Strip (EGS), and were supplemented by data obtained with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) between 3 and 9μm. The positional accuracy of ∼ 2 ′′ for most MIPS/IRAC detections prov...
متن کاملStarbursts and AGN in Luminous Infrared Galaxies
Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), which emit a significant fraction of their bolometric luminosity in the far-infrared, have LIR ≥ 10L⊙. LIRGs are a mixture of single galaxies, disk galaxy pairs, interacting systems, and advanced mergers which exhibit enhanced star-formation rates and AGN activity compared to normal galaxies. At the highest luminosities (LIR ≥ 10L⊙), Ultraluminous Infrared Ga...
متن کاملWhat powers luminous infrared galaxies?
Based on the initial data sets taken with the ISO short wavelength spectrometer (SWS) we present a first discussion of the source of luminosity of (ultra-)luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). By comparison of observations of 2.5-45 m lines to classical starbursts and active galactic nuclei and by modelling of the line emission we show that three key representatives of this class, Arp 220, NGC 6...
متن کاملNICMOS Imaging of Infrared-Luminous Galaxies
We present near-infrared images obtained with the HST NICMOS camera for a sample of 9 luminous (LIGs: LIR(8 − 1000μm) ≥ 10 11 L⊙) and 15 ultra-luminous (ULIGS: LIR ≥ 10 12 L⊙) infrared galaxies. The sample includes representative systems classified as warm (f25μm/f60μm > 0.2) and cold (f25μm/f60μm ≤ 0.2) based on the mid-infrared colors and systems with nuclear emission lines classified as HII ...
